Mesothelioma
What is Mesothelioma?
Mesothelioma is a type of cancer that most often affects the thin lining of the lungs, chest, abdomen, and sometimes the heart. Almost all cases of mesothelioma are caused by exposure to asbestos, which is the only known cause of this disease. It’s important to note that smoking does not cause mesothelioma. Unfortunately, mesothelioma is almost always fatal, and most people diagnosed with the disease are given only eight to twelve months to live. Even with early detection and the best treatments, the average five-year survival rate is only about 20 percent.
Mesothelioma Exposure:
People who have worked with or been around asbestos-containing products are at a higher risk of developing mesothelioma. This includes workers in industries like construction, shipyards, and refineries. People living with asbestos workers or near areas where asbestos is mined or used are also at risk. While mesothelioma is more common in older men, it can affect both men and women of any age.
Mesothelioma Cure:
Sadly, there is no cure for mesothelioma at this time. However, there are treatments available that can help manage the disease and improve quality of life. Doctors and researchers are constantly working on new experimental treatments and clinical trials to find a cure. The type of treatment used depends on several factors, such as the stage of the disease, the patient’s age, and the location of the mesothelioma. Some common treatments include:
Surgery:
Removing the affected tissue or part of an organ.
Radiation Therapy:
Using radiation to kill cancer cells.
Chemotherapy:
Using strong medications to attack cancer cells.

Related Areas of Practice
Asbestos
Asbestos is the generic name for any variety of silicate materials that is fibrous in structure and more resistant to acid and heat than many other materials. Asbestos exposure has affected millions of workers both in the United States and abroad. Since the early 1900s, scientific and medical research has shown that working with or being around asbestos can cause irreparable lung damage and cancer.
Lung Cancer
Lung cancer is the most common cause of death related to asbestos exposure. People working in industries such as mining, manufacturing, or handling asbestos products are more likely to develop lung cancer than the general population.
Asbestosis
Asbestosis is a serious lung disease that is not cancer. It happens when tiny asbestos fibers are breathed in, causing lung tissue to scar. This scarring makes it harder to breathe.
Other Cancers
Asbestos exposure can also lead to other types of cancer. Wherever asbestos can enter the body, it can cause harm. Consequently, asbestos victims also suffer from esophageal, laryngeal, throat, stomach and colon cancer.
